Catherine Ford was born in Bloomsbury, London; her father had abandoned her family and she was raised by her mother, grandmother and godparents. As a child Ford was afflicted with anxiety due to an obsessional-compulsive disorder. Ford was first attracted to acting at the age of teenager and joined the National Youth Theatre. She was admitted to Sylvia Young Theatre School but after a week, she decided that she was not a fit. Ford rather than applying to Central School of Speech and Drama and securing a place on her third attempt made an application and secured an admission to the Central School of Speech and Drama. Shaun Dingwall was one of Ford's fellow students. The actor went on to get regular roles in the shows Pete Tyler and Doctor Who. Ford completed her degree in 1993 however at the time she was already making her television debut in a 1991 episode of Surgical Spirit; she adopted her professional title "Catherine Tate". Through the Nineties, Tate could be watched on television in programs such as The Bill, Men Behaving Badly and London's Burning. Tate was a regular performer on stage and was a member of The Royal Shakespeare Company's season 2000-2001. Tate began to gain attention because of her stand-up comedic performances in 1996.
